Malama Internship

Christ Church Uniting Disciples and Presbyterians (CCU) invites young adults to the MALAMA Internship Program. The word Malama means stewardship in Hawaiian. The Malama Project brings together a cohort of four young adults (18-25) for a 10-week summer internship from May 27 to August 5, 2018, to serve as stewards of God’s creation and experiencing the breadth of ministry as they engage in vocational discernment.

The purpose of the Malama Internship program is to provide formational space in which young adults can explore the connection between their faith and vocation as they learn to serve God and God’s creation. The internship will offer a broad and thoughtful experience in ministry by exposing the interns to a wide-range of ministries at CCU such as worship leadership, pastoral visitations, cross-cultural and interfaith activities, and faith-based community organizing, giving particular attention to the unique context that is Hawai‘i. Through it all, the interns will have opportunities to develop and deepen relationships with one another and with members and friends of the congregation. These experiences will form the basis for reflection on their own vocational calling through written papers and intentional conversations with the pastor, mentors, and peers.

During these 10 weeks, each intern is expected to work 19 hours/week at the church. In addition, each intern should expect to spend additional 5-10 hours/week of “homework” i.e. preparing for worship, writing reflection papers, etc. In addition to weekly assigned activities:

  • Interns will engage in one-to-one conversation with a mentor, reflecting on Christian vocation and leadership.
  • Interns will participate in orientation and evaluation retreats
  • Interns will participate in an immersion experience which will require him/her to be away from his/her home for about a week.

Each intern will be remunerated $3,000 for the 10-week internship.

Preference for these positions is given in following order: CCU members/friends, members of congregations in Presbytery of the Pacific (PCUSA) and Pacific Southwest Region (DoC), participants in the 2017 Eco-Stewards program, members of Hawaii congregations, members of other Christian churches. Interns must have completed 1-year of college and must be at least 18-years old by May 27, 2018.

If you have questions about the internship, please contact Rev. Mary Paik at Application deadline is March 1; however, interns will be chosen on rolling basis so early application is advisable.
