    Job Description: Director of Music

    Christ Church Uniting is an inclusive, progressive community of faith seeking spiritual growth and working for justice on Oahu’s windward side.

    We are searching for a new Director of Music who will help shape the next season of our church’s music program, guiding our use of music as a spiritual practice and also helping us imagine new ways that music can serve as an outreach to our community.

    Responsibilities:

    We anticipate our new Director of Music will focus her/his efforts in two broad areas:

    Worship

    Music is a primary way many in our church community connect to God and our Music Director will be primarily responsible for helping to shape our worship music program including

    • Work with the Pastor and other worship leaders to select and coordinate hymns, anthems, and special musical performances appropriate for Sunday worship.

    • Encourage musical contributions from members and arranging for outside musicians when appropriate/necessary.

    • Support the worship experience through performance, as appropriate

    • Rehearse (weekly) and direct our small choir and other in-house ensembles (September-June)

    • Coordinate special musical offerings in summer months.

    • Work with Pastor to coordinate music for special services throughout the year including Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, and Maundy Thursday.

    Outreach & Development

    CCU has a long history of offering music as a gift to our community, through musical theatre programs, chamber concerts and an annual Handel’s Messiah sing-a-long. Going forward, we have plans to renew that ministry of musical outreach in a way that responds to the needs of our community today We hope our new Director of Music will help us to:

    • Coordinate musical events outside Sunday morning that connect the church and its ministry to the broader community. These could be concerts, special services, or outreach events, occasions to connect our spiritual practice with the community’s musical interests.

    • Network with the local music organizations and utilize other community resources to make connections with CCU’s ministry.

    Other Duties:

    And there are all the small tasks such as:

    • Coordinate maintenance and repair of church instruments

    • Supervise part-time paid organist

    • Assist with coordinating music for funerals and weddings, as needed

    • Participate, with the music committee, in the preparation and review of the church music budget.

    • Be visible to the larger church membership through active participation in the Sunday worship service, coffee hour and church events.

    • Perform other duties, as requested

    Qualifications:

    We anticipate that someone with these qualities will be a great fit for this position:

    • Have a background in general music theory

    • Have advanced music technique in some performance area (vocal or instrumental)

    • Have choral leadership experience

    • Possess interpersonal and group process skills

    • Have interest in developing and including a wide range of instrumentalists (soloists, ensembles, etc) in worship

    • Have interest in and experience with a wide range of church music from classical to modern.

    • Be able to bring a strong and fresh interpretation of liturgical music to the church.

    • Be connected to music scene for recruiting guest musicians of various genres.

    • Be interested in community ministry.

    Details:

    This is a 1/5 time salaried position, which reports to our Pastor and is evaluated by the church’s Personnel Committee. The pay will be commensurate with experience and will include four paid Sundays off each year.
